Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bowers Funeral Home - Houlton on Nov. 8, 2024.
HOULTON, It is with a sense of peace and hope that the family of Reginald (Reggie) Charles Corey share his passing from this life into the next on November 4th, 2024, after a long illness. He passed at Madigan Estates in Houlton, Maine, with his wife of 55 years, Diane, by his side.
Reggie came into this world on April 23rd, 1945, born to Rena and Hazen Corey of Littleton. His father died when Reggie was just six weeks old, and he was raised by his beloved mother with much support from his siblings.
Reggie graduated from Ricker Classical Institute and Ricker College and went on to a long career in public education, among many other pursuits. He taught at Oakfield High School and Hodgdon High School but spent most of his career at Mill Pond School in Hodgdon, teaching math and science. Over the course of his 44 years in education, he touched the lives of thousands of students and colleagues. It was difficult for him to go anywhere around town without being greeted by a, "Hey, Mr. Corey!" from someone.
Reggie was known as a jack-of-all-trades and could be called upon for any number of things, from preaching on Sunday in local churches (including for nine years at Amity Baptist!) to painting signs for businesses and tying flies to sell at sporting goods stores for fly fishing. For many years, he tended to a large garden and sold produce to the community at his farmstand, Corey's Last Stand. He loved a good pun and a "dad joke!" Reggie was artistic in many ways. One of his talents was for outdoor Christmas decorating. He was well known in the area for the giant Christmas star he would mount on the side of the house, that could be seen for miles around!
Reggie married the girl from across the street, Diane Woodworth, in 1969, after winning her over while working on the family farm. They shared two children together; Sam Corey of Portland, Oregon, and Melinda Corey of Albion, Maine (along with her husband, Jonathan Knock, who was like a son to Reggie). He had one grandchild, Caleb James, who was precious to him in so many ways. Reggie is also survived by his sister, Maxine Corey; a bonus sister, Kathy Ledger; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins, including special grandnephew and grandniece, Corey Woodworth and Carlie Tarr. He was pre-deceased by his parents; his siblings Wendell and Arlene and their spouses; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Reggie was especially fond of fishing with his dear friend Allen Duff, fiddleheading in the spring in all the secret spots he knew around town, composing poems and songs for loved ones, and studying his Bible to teach Sunday School and write sermons. He was often seen with a Diet Coke in hand, no matter what he was doing.
Reggie was a faithful member of Littleton Full Gospel Assembly in his youth, and Littleton United Baptist Church after he and Diane were married. He was involved as a deacon, Sunday School teacher/superintendent, youth leader, and pulpit supply over the years. His faith was central to his life, and he had no qualms about death, certain of the rest and joy that awaited him.
Please join the family for a visiting hour at Littleton United Baptist Church,11:00 AM-12:00 PM on Saturday, November 9th, with a service of remembrance immediately following at noon on Saturday, the Rev. Steve Straubel officiating. The service will be live streamed on the Facebook page of United Baptist Church of Littleton for those who are unable to attend but would like to participate.
The family extends special thanks to the staff at Houlton Regional Hospital Emergency Room and Acute Care Unit, Madigan House/Madigan Estates, and Andwell Hospice, for their loving care during this difficult time, and to Melinda Parent, for her care for both Reggie and Diane in these past few years.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Reggie's memory be made to the
Alzheimer's Association of Maine.
May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
