Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bizub Quinlan Funeral Home - Van Houten on May 10, 2025.
Rene Obregon, a cherished family man known for his humor and love, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2025, at the age of 87 in Woodland Park, NJ. Born on March 12, 1938, in Pinar del Rio, Cuba, Rene's journey led him to the United States in 1970, where he established deep roots and a loving family.
Rene is survived by his devoted wife, Carmen (nee Saharig) Obregon, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and memories. Together, they raised their children, Rene Obregon, Jr. (Karolin) and Mariela Pietrzak (Daniel), in a home filled with laughter and warmth. Rene's joy was multiplied with the arrival of his grandchildren, Sophie and William Pietrzak, and Leo and Simon Obregon, who will forever cherish their grandfather's playful spirit and tender care.
Preceded in death by his parents, Santiago and Rosa Blanca Obregon, and siblings Regino, Elsa, Nena, Leila, Raul, and Santiago, Rene's legacy continues through his surviving siblings, Aleida, Regino and Ramiro, who remember him with fondness and pride.
Rene lived the quintessential American dream. He came to the US escaping communism in Cuba in 1970 and established roots in
Clifton, NJ. At night school English classes in those early years, he met the love of his life, Carmen. Over the next 40 years, he proudly worked at Atlas Industrial Manufacturing Co in
Clifton, NJ as a welder. In his spare time, he enjoyed tinkering around the house and working in his vegetable garden. Later in life, he filled his weekends with happy hour Friday's at his home with family and friends that were filled with jokes, lots of rum and cokes and occasionally a dance.
Above all, Rene's greatest pleasure was the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. He always had a soft spot for his grandchildren, indulging them with ice cream and funnel cakes at the beach when they were young. As his grandchildren got older, he took pride in passing on the tradition of preparing "pernil" for Christmas Eve dinner. Whether it was cracking jokes at his regular happy hours, playing domino's with his grandkids at the beach or visiting his family in Cuba, Rene's love for his family was at his core. His ability to make others laugh and his warm smile will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Rene's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with the threads of joy, hard work, and devotion. His memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched, a lasting tribute to a life well-lived. As we say farewell to Rene, we celebrate the legacy of a man who taught us the value of laughter, the strength of love, and the beauty of selflessness.
