Reuben Gonzales, age 82, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2026, in Garden City, Kansas. He was born on April 13, 1943, in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, on an Apache reservation.
Reuben lived a full and hardworking life, marked by dedication to his family, his country, and his community. He proudly served in the United States Army, carrying that sense of duty and strength with him throughout his life.
He later served as a police officer in Garden City, where he worked to protect and serve his community. Over the years, he also worked at Palmers for 15 years and Monfort Beef for 17 years. Known as a “jack of all trades,” Reuben could fix just about anything and was always willing to lend a helping hand.
He found joy in life’s simple pleasures—fishing, reading, and spending time with friends. Above all, he cherished his family and the time he shared with them.
Reuben is survived by his three sons: JJ Gonzales and wife Diana of Garden City, Kansas; Joaquin Gonzales and wife Lisa of Overland Park, Kansas; and Damian Gonzales. He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, who will carry on his legacy and memory.
He is also survived by his brothers Ray and Eddie, and his sister Margaret.
He was preceded in death by his father, Benefacio Gonzales; his mother, Santana Gonzales; his brothers Joe, Orlando, and Damian; and his sisters Eleanor, Dora, and Bonita.
Reuben will be remembered for his strength, his resilience, his quiet wisdom, and the deep love he had for his family and friends. His life was one of service, hard work, and kindness, and his memory will live on in all who knew and loved him.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
