Richard Abney Obituary

Richard Davis "Rick" Abney, a cherished father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on November 20, 2025, following a brief illness. Born on March 11, 1964, in Madison County, Kentucky, Rick was a man whose life was defined by his loving nature, resourcefulness, and generosity.
Rick's early years in Madison County laid the foundation for a life rich in family values and community ties. He was born to parents Bobby J Abney and Betty Lou Casteel Abney, who, along with his infant grandson Stephen Conner Stipp, brother Joseph Abney, grandparents Leonard and Ethel Drew Abney, and Richard and Ruby Jones Casteel, and father-in-law Dink Powell preceded him in death. Rick's family was the cornerstone of his life, and he was a devoted son, brother, and later, a father who instilled the importance of family in his own children. His former wife and lifelong friend, Cathy Abney, alongside their children, Josh Abney, Missy (Daniel) Stipp, Becky (Justin) Brandenburg, and Crystal "Crickle" Abney, and grandchildren Kaylee Abney, Jackson Stipp, Kasen Abney, Blake Brandenburg, Isaac Stipp, Lucas Brandenburg, Jacob Abney, and Harrison Stipp will forever cherish his memory and the love he so freely gave.
Rick's brother Glen (Mary) Abney and sister Rebecca (Larry) Roy, along with his mother-in-law Mary Lou Powell and sister-in-law Lisa Powell, will remember Rick for his unwavering support and the joy he brought to their lives. Though the pain of loss is profound, the family finds comfort in treasured memories and the legacy of love Rick left behind.
A man of the earth, Rick's passion for farming was more than a profession; it was a way of life. His hands, often soiled from the soil of his beloved garden, were a testament to his dedication to tending the land and providing for his family.
Rick's interests extended beyond the fields to his immaculately kept yard and the joyous laughter of his grandchildren, with whom he cherished spending time. He was a man who found contentment in life's simple pleasures, whether it was nurturing his garden or crafting something with his hands. His generosity knew no bounds, and he was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.
Those who knew Rick will remember him as a loving father, a handyman who could fix anything, and a generous soul who never hesitated to share with others. His presence was a source of comfort and his actions a model of kindness. As we bid farewell to Richard Davis "Rick" Abney, we celebrate a life well-lived and a man well-loved. His spirit will continue to inspire us, and his memory will be treasured in our hearts forever.
Honorary Pallbearers are his grandchildren and Matt Sawyers.
The family will be accepting friends from 4 pm to 6 pm at Lakes Funeral Home on Sunday, November 23, 2025.
