Over the years, he was a township board officer, a Wild Rice Electric board director, served on the Red River Basin Board, and was a Norman County Commissioner. Dick was also an active, lifelong member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, where he was baptized, confirmed, and married. In his spare time, he enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards, bowling, and doing jigsaw and crossword puzzles. He also spent many hours listening to classical music. Dick enjoyed gardening and could often be found tending to his more than 200 gladiolus and other flowers. He had a special place in his heart for animals and usually had a beloved dog by his side.
