EAST HERKIMER – Richard H. Blum "Sonny" age 86, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 13, 2023, at his home. He was born on September 20, 1936, a son of the late Herman A. and Catherine (Gibson) Blum. He was raised and educated in Herkimer and enlisted in the US Air Force. For many years Richard worked for the Herkimer County Highway Department and later for Views Paving. In his younger days he was a boxing enthusiast, going by the name of Sonny Niles. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed his motorcycle, hunting, Civil War re-enactments, and the annual Thanksgiving Interfaith Service at the Fort Herkimer Church. Richard will be remembered for his patriotism. He was a member of the Vietnam Veteran of America, Chapter 827 Herkimer County, North East Vietnam Veterans of Freehold.
He leaves behind his cherished daughter, Debbie Blum Rogers, a twin brother Roger, Blum and younger brother, Jeremy Blum and his wife Carol, nephews, Scott, Keith, Mark, three nieces, Darlene Brewer, Courtney Blum Brown, Tiffany Blum as well as his two feline companions. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his long time loyal friend, Violet Franklin, on July 25, 2018, a sister-in-law, Carol and nephew, Jamie Blum.
A graveside service will take place in Oak Hill cemetery this spring at a time to be announced.
