Richard Brewer Obituary

Richard Johnston "Doc" Brewer, 90, of Brookville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, in Clarion.

Known for his unfailing wit, long stories and steadfast certainty about just about everything, Doc left behind a legacy of laughter, love and community service.

Born February 6, 1935, in Brookville, he was the son of Harry C. and Fay L. (Masters) Brewer.

Doc spent nearly his entire life in the place he called home, deeply woven into the fabric of his community.

On December 18, 1976, he married the love of his life, Dorothy A. (Wright) Gunning. Together, they built a rich and memorable life, until her passing in 2022, marked by partnership, mutual respect and shared laughter.

Doc was a hard worker and a born storyteller. For 30 years, he operated Brewer Appliance, a local fixture known as much for its reliable service as for Doc's friendly conversation and reliable advice.

He loved the simple joys of life - attending tractor shows, square dancing with friends and sharing stories that stretched across decades and topics. Everyone who knew him could expect a tale or two, often told with a twinkle in his eye and always ending with Doc being "famously right."

Beyond his business and hobbies, Doc generously gave his time to the community, particularly enjoying delivering meals to shut-ins and older neighbors, whom he treated like family.

Doc is survived by his daughter, Sue Gunning; sons, Shawn Gunning, Michael Brewer, Steven (Millie) Brewer and Edward (Thuytrang) Brewer; his sister, Mary Wood; and grandchildren, Melissa Ethridge, Samantha Thomas, Matthew Gunning, and Ernest, Trisha, Daniel, Jake, Zeke and Ollie Brewer; along with several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy; his son, Kenneth (Vera, who survives) Brewer; his sister, Harriet Stoltz; his parents; and grandchildren, Zachary, Jedediah and Heather.

A service to honor Doc's life will be held privately in accordance with his wishes.

His humor, kindness and self-assured wisdom will long be remembered.

Interment will also take place privately at the Temple Cemetery, Warsaw Township, Jefferson County.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Carrier Funeral Home, located at 2834 Maplevale Road in Brookville.

Doc & I were in the same class in high school. I never saw him in a bad mood ever. He arranged our class reunions, always full of fun & jokes. He knew everyone & everything going on in town. It was a joy to see him when I´d come back for reunions, a super kind thoughtful good guy. Many fond memories go with Doc & he´ll be stirring things up wherever he is now. Great journey, Doc. Hope to see you again one day. Condolences to all the family. He was a gem!
