Gary Brewer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Seals Funeral Home - Fortville on Feb. 26, 2026.
Gary M. Brewer, 84, of Fortville, passed away Monday, February 23, 2026, at his home surrounded by family members. He was born October 8, 1941, in Indianapolis to Roger and Alene (Hopper) Brewer.

Gary had a true entrepreneurial spirit and was a proud proprietor in the town of Fortville, where he owned and operated some local business, including one of the town's barbershops, the original Sunrise Donuts (before it was reincarnated in 2015) and a lightning rod business. Earlier in his career he worked at Strough's Grocery Store in Fortville and later for Ford Motor Company. Of all his work the role he cherished most was serving as a fishing guide on Toledo Bend Reservoir in Texas, where his storytelling was as legendary as his fishing expertise - full of humor and wit. A true jokester, Gary, had a way of making people laugh and leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Gary's love of the outdoors extended far beyond his own time on the water. He founded the Tuesday night B.A.S.S. tournaments at Geist Reservoir and faithfully ran them for 40+ years, creating community and camaraderie among fellow anglers. He also established a youth fishing program in southern Indiana, passing down not only his knowledge of the sport but his passion for it. When he wasn't casting a line, Gary enjoyed playing poker, hunting and sharing stories that were often just as memorable as the catch itself.

Gary is survived by his beloved wife, Jackie (Tilton) Brewer. Their love story began in 1977 and culminated in marriage on March 8th, 1991. Their lifelong partnership spanned nearly five decades. Together they raised five children, built businesses in Fortville, and created a life marked by commitment, perseverance, and love. He is also survived by five children Todd Brewer, Marsan Brewer, Stephanine (Chaz) Jones and Cara Gerardot, grandchildren Mackenzie, Jordon, Esabella, and Regan, great-grandsons Jaxton, Maddix, Bram and Jayce, and brother Don (Carol) Brewer.

Gary was preceded in death by his son Randy Brewer, his parents, listed above, sisters Clara Bell Uberta and Virginia Hummerickhouse.

A funeral to celebrate Gary's life will be held at 4:00 pm on Sunday, March 1st, 2026, at Seals Funeral Home 122 W. Staat Street Fortville, IN 46040. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 1:00 pm until the time of service.
