David Whitis Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Light Memorial & Funeral Chapel - Monrovia on Feb. 18, 2026.
David D. "Dave" Whitis, 79, of Plainfield, and formerly of Fortville, left this world unexpectedly on Saturday, February 14, 2026, while in the care of Community East Hospital. He was born in Somerset, KY on September 20, 1946, to the late Evan "Freeman" Whitis and Irma (Raney) Willougby.

Drafted into the United States Marine Corps as a young man, Dave spent thirteen months stationed in Vietnam. Upon his return stateside, he met the love of his life and future wife, Barbara, at a local drugstore soda fountain. She sat down next to the handsome Marine who was dressed in uniform, and they struck up a conversation. The pair fell fast in love and were married on February 22, 1969, and brought their one and only daughter, Sherry, into the world.

Originally, a self-employed truck driver, Dave was a motorcycle enthusiast at heart and reveled in riding his prized 900 Kawasaki (that he parked in the kitchen), and later his Honda Goldwing. Mechanically gifted, he worked at AAA Motorcycle. He loved animals, fishing, and was most proud to be a father and grandfather. He taught his daughter many lessons in life and was always her biggest hero. Respectful, down-to-earth, humble, and kind, he was a hero in the eyes of those who loved him the most. A huge storyteller, Dave liked popping off with a good joke, ensuring big laughs from his audience. The best husband, father, and grandfather anyone could ask for, he was patient and wise beyond his years. Saved just a week before his passing, Dave's soul will rest eternally in Heaven. Although gone from the home, his memory will reside in the hearts of all that knew and loved him.

Along with his parents, Dave was preceded in death by his stepfather, Albert Willoughby, and siblings, Forrest Whitis, William "Billy" Whitis, and Timothy "Tim" Whitis.

He leaves behind his best friend and wife of just shy of 57 years, Barbara Whitis of Plainfield, and formerly of Fortville; daddy's girl, Sherry Clark (Tim) of Plainfield; grandsons, Bryce Clark (significant other, Megan) of Mooresville, and Brennan Clark (significant other, Valerie) of Gosport; sister in law, Gail Whitis of Fortville; canine companion, Rosie; as well as several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
