Richard "Dicky" Lee Broy, Sr., age 78 of Sellersburg, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at Clark Memorial Hospital, surrounded by the family he adored - including the sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and treasured nieces and nephews he loved as his own. His final moments were filled with the same love, loyalty, and strength of spirit that defined his entire life.
Dicky's story is one rooted in service, devotion, and deep pride in his country and community. As a young man, he answered the call of duty and honorably served in the United States Marine Corps, carrying with him the discipline and brotherhood of the Corps for the rest of his life. Upon returning home to Indiana, he dedicated the next quarter-century to the Jeffersonville Fire Department, serving mostly at the Hamburg Pike and Wall Street stations. There, he became a trusted mentor, respected leader, and true brother-in-arms. Dicky retired with distinction as Captain of Engine #3 - a role he carried with humility, courage, and unwavering dedication.
When he wasn't serving others, Dicky found peace and joy in the great outdoors. He loved camping, fishing, and any excuse to be out on the water, soaking in the simple beauty of nature. His voice carried far and wide when cheering for NASCAR, and he had an unshakable love for his beloved UK WILDCATS - passions that brought him countless hours of excitement and camaraderie.
Above all else, Dicky was a devoted family man. He especially cherished time with his nieces and nephews, who held a special place in his heart, and he had a soft spot for every four-legged friend who wandered into his life. His kindness, humor, and warmth made him a source of comfort and strength to all who loved him.
Dicky is preceded in death by his father, Rudolph Broy; his sister, Janie Cato; his brother, Denny Broy; and his sweet doggie, Jo Jo, who no doubt greeted him with a wagging tail and kisses.
He is survived by his loving wife of twenty years, Mary M. (Payne) Broy; his children, Krissy Broy and Richard Broy, Jr.; his cherished granddaughter, Hannah; great-grandson, Dante; his mother, Inez (Asher) Broy; his sisters, Marilyn Carver (David), Gail Bailey (Randy), and Debbie McGlone; and his brothers, Alan, Frank, and John Broy. Each of them carries a piece of his legacy - his laughter, his grit, and his generous heart.
Visitation will begin 11 AM on Saturday, November 22, 2025 at Legacy Funeral Center. Funeral services will be held 2 PM on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at Legacy Funeral Center (921 Main Street, Jeffersonville). In a fitting tribute to a man who served both his nation and his community with honor, the Jeffersonville Fire House Honor Guard will join the Fort Knox Military Detail Honor Guard to render their respects. Graveside services will follow at a later date at Utica Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest with dignity and gratitude.
Richard "Dicky" Lee Broy, Sr. lived a life marked by courage, loyalty, and love. He leaves behind a legacy of service, a family strengthened by his devotion, and a community forever grateful for his dedication. May his memory continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
