Richard Duayne Brumback was born on October 2, 1933, to Dess Andrew and Opal Belle (Hertweck) Brumback. He was raised on their farm in Diggins and graduated from Seymour High School in 1950. He worked along side his mom and sister, Veda, in a garment factory until he was drafted by the United States Army, in 1951, to defend our country in the Korean War. Richard was stationed in Berlin, Germany, and his work as a medic is what began is life long Mission to serve his community as a mortician and funeral director. Shortly after returning from Berlin, he began working as a purchasing agent at The Lily Tulip Cup Corporation in Springfield Mo. Realizing his desire to pursue funeral service, he enrolled at Southwest Missouri State College and later at Drury College in Springfield. In 1958, Richard met his life long love on a Sunday afternoon while cruising the Marshfield Square. They married in 1960 and raised two daughters, Julie and Susan. In 1968 the family moved to Stockton, Missouri, and Richard began his 48 year career along side his brother and mentor, Doyle, and their families. Richard and Judy believed they were called by God to Stockton, and serving the Stockton and Jerico Springs communities, grew to be much more than a job. His work and commitment to his faith was the driving force behind every decision he made. He served with his whole heart and was skilled at using his compassion, generosity and sense of humor to help others through their time of grief and despair. His family and close friends grew to proceed with caution when in conversation with him because one did not know what comment would be his come-back with a twinkle in his eye and ornery look on his face.
Richard is survived by his wife of 64 years, Judy; two daughters, Julie Brumback Gumm (Mark), Susan Brumback Thomas (Jay); three grandchildren, Hailey Thomas Brown (Caleb) Marcus Richard Gumm (Paige) Hannah Thomas Whittaker (Kale); and three great grandchildren, Isabella Gumm, Beau Brown and Elanora Gumm. He was excited and anticipating his fourth great-grandchild, Baby Whittaker. He was known as Uncle Duayne by his nieces, Melinda Long (Dan), Lydia Stephens (Tony), Amy Rader and Charlena Applegate and nephew Randall Thornton, along with his best friend Bill Smith and wife Evelyn. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Doyle, sisters Veda and Devora, niece Kathy Brumback Thornton and in-laws Lloyd, Bea and Rick Rader.
