Richard Byrd, age 65, passed away Tuesday Morning, March 3, 2026, at his home in Batesville, MS.

The family will be celebrating Richard's life on Sunday, March 8, 2026, in the Martin Willingham Memorial Chapel of Wells Funeral Home at 2:00 P.M. with a memorial gathering prior to the celebration at 1:00 P.M.

Richard was born on October 23, 1960, in Biloxi, Mississippi to the late Irby Lee Byrd and Phyllis Gay Shoulders Byrd and lived a life filled with love, wisdom, and unforgettable moments.

Richard was a proud United States Army Veteran. His service to his country not only reflected his dedication but also his commitment to the values he held dear. He was a man with a warm spirit and an open heart, well-known for his ability to forge connections with everyone he met; he truly never met a stranger. His loving nature extended not only to his family but also to the friends of his children, who often looked up to him as a father figure, while their children affectionately called him "granddaddy." Richard had a passion for Harley-Davidson Motorcycles.

He is survived by his daughters Rachel Byrd of Batesville, Mississippi, and Jennifer Johnson (Jacky Presley) of Pope, Mississippi, as well as his son Jeremy Byrd (Amanda) of Hernando, Mississippi. Richard cherished his role as a father and embraced being a grandfather to his seven grandchildren: Nicolas Byrd, Kenneth Smith, Phillip Byrd, Charlie Byrd, Isabella Johnson, Carlee Byrd, and Jase Byrd. The joy of a great-grandfather also graced his life with the arrival of his great-granddaughter, Paisley Jane “PJ” Smith.

Richard's siblings shared a bond with him that lasted throughout his life. He is survived by his sister Debra Beavers of Courtland, Mississippi, sister Cindy Shearon of Water Valley, Mississippi, brother Bud Byrd of Elkins, West Virginia, and brother Jeff Byrd of Pharr, Texas.

Richard was not only loved by his family but also adored by his furry companions. He had one inside dog, Susie, whom he considered his girl, and two outside grandpups, Maggie and Rocky, who brought joy to his days as he enjoyed watching them play in the yard.

He had many interests and hobbies, but above all, Richard's greatest love was for his family. His laughter and wisdom will be missed greatly, leaving a lasting impact on everyone he encountered.
