Richard Cooper Obituary

Published by Legacy on Nov. 13, 2025.
Richard (Coop) Douglas Cooper, 88, of Freeport, Maine, passed away peacefully on November 9, 2025, after a brief illness. He was born on October 10, 1937, to Lindsay and Catherine (King) Cooper in Woolwich, Maine.

Coop served honorably in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1959 with most of his time in France. He came back to Maine and began his lifelong career with the phone company and to start his family.

After retiring, Coop enjoyed traveling, playing golf and spending time with his friends and family. He was an active life member of the AMVETS at the Robert W Boyd AMVETS Post 2 in Yarmouth where you could often find him schooling the "boys" on how to play three ball.

Coop is survived by his son Greg, brother in-law Stanton Whitaker and many nieces and nephews as well as his bonus family stepchildren; Lisa Stoddard, Matthew Stoddard Sr., Donna Watson and husband Jamie; step grandchildren Joseph Grant and his wife Jenna, Chelsey Watson, Cameron Ketchen, Khristopher Barry and Matthew Stoddard Jr., four step great grandchildren, Bailey, Ashlynn, Charlotte and Carlos and a dear friend Lisa Lennan.

Coop was predeceased by his parents, sister Donna and as Coop often said, his two loves of his life: wives Jean and Dottie.

Coop's wit was legendary; his quick comebacks would leave you laughing hours later. He also had a heart of gold, always offering kind words and making everyone feel welcomed that he met along his journey. Just before he passed Coop shared, he had lived a long and blessed life, and it was ok it was his time.

A celebration of life will be held at the AMVETS Post 2 hall in Yarmouth at 1pm on Saturday November 29th where we hope people will join us and share your favorite stories of a man who lived his life fully until the very end.

The family would like to thank the folks at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House for their outstanding, compassionate, and loving care of Coop in his final days.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, 11 Hunnewell Rd, Scarborough, ME 04074.
