Richard “Dick” Joseph Dolter, 81, of Marion, Iowa, formerly of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away holding his bride of almost 54 years hand and surrounded by family on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Celebration of life will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, with a memorial service beginning at 5 p.m. An additional celebration will be held from 2 - 5 p.m. on Friday, September 12, 2025, at Happy's Place located at 2323 Rockdale Road, Dubuque, Iowa 52003. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque.

Dick was born on January 20, 1944, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Leo and Leona (Schroeder) Dolter. He was a 1962 graduate of Wahlert Catholic High School and went on to serve honorably in the United States Air Force. On September 24, 1971, Dick was united in marriage to Barbara Hedrick at Holy Trinity Church. He made his career at Northwestern Bell Company, now US West Qwest, until his retirement in 2008 after 42 years.

In his younger years, he enjoyed playing softball and bowling, and later went on to coach Little League, where he loved sharing his passion for the game with others. A true outdoorsman, he found joy in ice fishing, hunting, bass fishing, and even crafting his own lures. At home, he was always busy with projects and improvements, but he also cherished the simple pleasure of shopping trips, walks, visits with friends, family reunions, and the traditional fish fries that brought everyone together. He had a knack for finding treasures at farmers markets, and though he was known for being fashionably late, his presence was always worth the wait. Above all, he took great pride in his role as a devoted husband and father, a responsibility he held close to his heart and carried out with unwavering love and dedication.

Dick is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Barbara of Marion; children Russell (Lissa) Dolter of Keokuk, Iowa, Alan Dolter of Cedar Rapids, and Angela Shook (Tim Isaacson) of Marion; two grandchildren, Noah and Makenzie Shook of Marion; four step-grandchildren, Rebbeccah (Hayden Brison) Snyder of Cedar Rapids, Emily (Jacob) Turney of Urbandale, Iowa, Helena Snyder of West Des Moines, Iowa, and David Snyder of Johnston, Iowa; step-great-grandchildren, August, Jamie, Malcom, Matilda, and Daphne; and sisters, Donna Hirsch of Dubuque, and Ruth Konrardy of Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Leona Dolter; daughter in infancy, Caroline Marie; sisters, Mary Ann “Minnie” Steil, and Carol Karlin; and brother-in-law, James “Fred” Hirsch.
