Richard Stockton “Doc” Hoadley, age 79, of Kewadin, MI, passed away peacefully at home with family at his side February 4, 2023.
He was born to Alfred and Caroline (Warner) Hoadley on April 16, 1943 in Chester, Pennsylvania.
Richard graduated from Napoleon Ohio High School in 1961. He continued his education at William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa and received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and biology in 1965, in that same year he married Mary Nicholson, on March 27, in Webster City, Iowa. Richard continued on at Ohio State University college of dentistry and received his D.D.S. in dentistry in 1969.
Richard joined the Public Health Service in 1969 and was assigned to the U.S. Coast Guard for 5 years. He was stationed in Astoria, Oregon and then Traverse City, Michigan in 1972 and was a Lieutenant Commander when he was honorably discharged in 1974.
In 1974 he set up his own dental practice in Elk Rapids, Michigan until 2012. He taught dental assistant students at Northwestern Michigan College from 2009-2014. Upon closing his dental practice, he worked at Elk Rapids Esthetic Dentistry until he retired in September of 2022.
Doc was a member of the Elk Rapids Sportsmen Club, Rotary, Cherry Mug, Boardman Valley Gun club, NRA, Republicans, American Legion, AMVETs Post 114, Nature Conservancy, Camera club of Traverse City, Train Group, Grass River and Clam Lake Association, Mud Lake gun club, Elk Rapids Ambulance where he was an EMT and instructor/coordinator, he taught Hunters Safety, participated in Rendezvous, he was a past member of the Milton Township Fire Department.
Doc enjoyed photography, computers, chip carving, knot tying, shooting and reloading, gun collecting, and especially spending time with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Lionel and Mary Nicholson, brother and sister-in-law, Wendell and Patricia Nicholson.
Doc is survived by his loving wife, Mary; children, David (Pam) Hoadley from Perrysburg, Ohio, Michael (Becky) Hoadley, from Pulaski, Virginia, and Sara Hoadley from Kewadin, Michigan, and 3 grandsons, James, Gabriel and Damon Hoadley.
Memorial contributions in Doc’s honor may be made to a charity of your choice.
A Gathering of Family and Friends will take place Saturday, June 24th from 1 to 4 p.m. at 4151 Sutter Lane, Kewadin, MI 49648 with a Celebration of Life at 1:30.
