Obituary of Richard Clarence Dunn
Richard Clarence Dunn was born on August 13, 1936 to Clarence and Marguerite Dunn in the Greeley Hospital which was at 16th Street and 11th Avenue. His maternal grandmother, Clara Moore, had been the first and only nurse when this hospital first opened in 1904. Richard passed into heaven on August 2, 2023, 11 days shy of his 87th birthday. He grew up on a farm near Kersey through the 7th grade then his family moved to a farm close to Eaton where he spent the majority of the rest of his life.
Richard graduated from Eaton High School in 1954 where he had been active in band, FFA and his church choir. He had served as an officer in the Colorado State FFA. He enjoyed working on the farm with his father. He graduated from Colorado State University in 1958 with a Bachelor degree in Agricultural Science. After spending the summer farming with his father he went into the U.S. Army in October, 1958. His second year of service was spent in South Korea where he was stationed just 8 miles south of the DMZ zone. They were in reconstruction after the Korean War, and he was very impressed with the Korean people. He had opportunity to assist the chaplain in visiting orphanages on a number of occasions. One fun incident was that while in Korea one of his letters from his mother said, "We have a new organist at church. She is a college student, and she is blond." Little did anyone know that he would come home and eventually marry her!
Upon returning home from Korea, Rich served 2 additional years in the Army Reserves, returned to CSU to acquire a Masters' degree in Agricultural Economics and married Norma Gockley -- that organist! They moved to Denver where he worked on Western Livestock Information Project, a joint effort between CSU and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. After six enjoyable years in Denver they returned to the family farm upon Richard's father's retirement. They now had two little boys, Drew and Seth; and three little girls, Melanie, Stephanie and Alissa came in the next five years. Rich farmed for years and then taught Economics at Aims for thirteen years before retiring.
Throughout that time and during his retirement he has served God and people in so many ways. He served in a variety of capacities at the Presbyterian Churches in Denver and Greeley. He also actively served Dayspring Christian Academy in its early years. For decades he worked with children and youth ministries. He was instrumental in helping establish the mission organization that became In Motion Ministries, and he led many teams throughout the world.
Richard passed away in his home on the farm that he loved so much. He is survived by his wife, Norma Gockley Dunn, of 61 years, sons Drew (Mary) of Hewitt, Texas, Seth (Saundra) of Greeley, and daughters Stephanie (Dan French) of Salina, Oklahoma and Alissa (Brent) Miller of Greeley, grandchildren Jordan (Mandi) Dunn, Coleman Yarnell, Austin (Shannon) Miller, McKenzie (Chris) Dunn-Morris, Justin (Briana) Miller, Hunter Miller, Danielle, Avie and Simon Dunn, great granddaughter Sadie Dunn and great grandson Maverick Miller, his sister Ruth Ann (Jim) Odle and brother Bill (Judy)Dunn. He was preceded in death by his daughter Melanie Dunn.
