Dunphy, Jr., Richard J., age 75, of Wayne, passed on Monday, August 28, 2023. Born in Englewood and raised in Teaneck, Richard had lived in River Edge for most of his life before moving to Wayne 20 years ago. He was a Bergen Catholic alumnus where he played football and competed in track and field. He moved on to graduate from Tufts University. After graduation, Richard worked for his father at Dick Dunphy Advertising in New York City. He became the owner and operator of the company in 2010 and led the company until his passing. He served as a pastor for Vineyard Christian Fellowship of the Tri-State area. An amateur shot putter for most of his life, he won the Masters national championship in his age group in 1980. He was an active member of USA Track and Field where he worked with the youth and later became an official.
Richard was the beloved husband of Jane Van Lenten Dunphy. Loving father of Drew Dunphy and his wife Sheila, Jamie Dunphy and his wife Kara, Megan Mathisen and her husband Billy, Sarah Dunphy and Jessica Walsh. Dear grandfather of Autum Dunphy, Jaclyn Walsh, Ryley Mathisen, Donatella Dunphy, Charlotte Walsh and Sean Mathisen. Dearest brother of Irene Goldberg, Tom Dunphy, and Paul Dunphy. Step-brother of David Mowry and the late Wayne Mowry. Richard is also survived by the mother of his children, Pat Dunphy.
Friends may visit from 1-3:30pm on Saturday, September 2, 2023 at the Browning-Forshay Funeral Home, 557 Lafayette Ave., Hawthorne. A service will be held at 3:30pm. Cremation will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to the USA Track & Field Youth Club at usatffoundation.org
