Richard Charles Durow, known by friends and family as Dick, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2024, at the age of 80. Dick was born to Lloyd and Germaine Dohrman Durow on August 14, 1943. His life was one marked by devotion to his loved ones, which includes many friends, a passion for music, and a commitment to his community.
After graduating from Hayden High School, Dick furthered his education by attending Kansas State University where he played football and Washburn University where he played baseball. His professional life was characterized by a dedicated career as a Goodyear Pipe fitter, from which he retired after many years of commendable service. He was a union member and representative of Local 307. He taught classes at Washburn Vocational Technical to Goodyear employees. Beyond his work, Dick was actively involved in various associations -member of Monfort Lane Band Kansas Prairie Pickers, life member of THE Archery Club, life member of Lecompton Historical Society and founder of Pomona Annual Campout and Pickin' Party.
Dick's life was enriched by his deep love for music. He played trumpet in jr.high and high school. He felt very honored to play Taps at veteran's funerals.
An adept upright bass player, he found joy in sharing his talent with many friends. Throughout his life, he was a familiar and welcome presence at music festivals, where he both played and enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow music enthusiasts. He loved singing "Home Grown Tomatoes",which was frequently requested by friends. This love of music was just one of the ways he connected with others and brought joy into their lives.
His interests extended beyond the musical realm. Dick was an ardent fan of car racing and sports, finding excitement and relaxation in these pastimes. He also cherished the time spent traveling with Bobbie and friends, discovering new places and experiences. His farm was not only a place of work but also a sanctuary where he could engage with the land and indulge in the tranquility of nature. He was outgoing and made friends easily.
His favorite saying was "Life Is Good".
Friends and family was the cornerstone of Dick's life. He is survived by his beloved wife, Bobbie; two stepsons; a son and a daughter; a step grand daughter, five grandchildren; a step-great-grandson; and a great-grandson, and many great friends! He was predeceased by his parents Lloyd and Germaine Dohrman Durow, brother Terry, and a daughter. Her memory remained a tender part of his heart. Dick's role as a husband, father, grandfather, and friend was imbued with kindness, friendliness, and thoughtfulness-qualities that he effortlessly exuded and that will be deeply missed.
Dick's passing was due to complications from liver and lung cancer, with his heart ultimately giving out after a brave and dignified battle. His strength and resilience during his illness were an inspiration to all who knew him, and his legacy of warmth and generosity will continue to shine brightly in the lives of those he touched.
His memory will be cherished and kept alive in the stories told, the music played, and the laughter shared. Dick's presence will be deeply missed, and his impact on the lives of those he loved will be felt for generations to come.
Dick requested no services.

About eight years ago I got introduced to the Bluegrass community at Kansas Prairie Pickers. Dick was very welcoming and as a newcomer to the group I always looked to see him when I entered the building. He was also knowledgeable of an event that happened in Burlingame before I moved to town about which I enjoyed hearing funny stories involving the incident. He was also very supportive of the young kids I brought to KPPA. He will be greatly missed!
