Richard C. Ethier

Richard C. "Dick" Ethier, Sr., a man whose life was a masterclass in curiosity, dedication, and the occasional well-timed, mischievous grin, peacefully powered down on October 25, 2025, surrounded by the warm glow of his loving family. He was 81 years old.

Richard was born in Providence, RI to Theresa (Pariseau) and Alfred C. Ethier. He completed his education at Pawtucket Vocational High School and signed up for early enlistment in the United States Marine Corp. After completing boot camp at Paris Island, SC, he was assigned to the motor transport company. Soon after this move, he was sent to Vietnam and completed two tours of duty. During his service, he earned many awards including Combat Air Crew, Insignia Air Medal and the Navy Unit Citation. He was promoted to Staff Sargent after three years of service and honorably discharged in 1968, but the Marine spirit never left him - once a Marine, always a Marine.

After his service, he joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 99 and became a Master Electrician. During his 50-year career, he worked on some well-known RI locations including, RI Hospital, Providence Civic Center, Hospital Trust Building, Johnston Power Plant and many more.

In retirement, Richard shared his expertise by teaching young electrical apprentices for his local union. He was a man of infinite passions. He built and flew model airplanes with the precision of a seasoned pilot and studied birds through the Cornell Ornithology School of Birds. He was an avid reader and history buff, and devoured books like they were going out of style. He loved photography and maintained that "the candid shots were the best" - a philosophy that likely led to many priceless family photos. He also had a soft spot for vintage cars and could often be found at local car shows.

Richard is survived by his children, Kimberley Baffaro (Mike), Kerry Robinson (Rodney), Karen Myslinski (Wayne), and Richard C. "Rick" Ethier, Jr. (Cathy). He was their North Star and their biggest cheerleader. But it was as "Pepere" that he truly shone. With 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, his legacy is a constellation of laughter and good advice. He leaves behind his brother Paul Ethier (Cheryl), three nieces, and several great-nieces and great-nephews, all of whom will miss his larger-than-life presence. He also leaves behind dear friends Francis Ethier and Cynthia "Cindy" Jones.

Richard was warm, friendly and loved spending time with family and friends. He was extremely knowledgeable and enjoyed discussing any number of topics with anyone he could engage with. You could always count on Richard when in need; his generosity was enormous.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at the Rhode Island Veterans Home for their compassionate care and the Providence Veterans, Rhode Island, South County and Newport Hospitals. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Disabled American Veterans organizations, in loving memory of Richard.

Burial with military honors will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, 103 S. County Trail, Exeter, RI at 12:00 p.m. Family and friends are invited to gather to celebrate Richard's life and share in remembrance.
