Richard Paul Finch (Rick to those who loved him) died in a skiing accident on Thursday afternoon, January 18, 2024. And man, do we miss him already.
Rick was happiest on his motorcycle, riding down some country roads to no place in particular. He was happiest watching his grandchildren try their best in a sport or activity. He was happiest sharing a beer with his friends after a long day working together. He was happiest talking about Clarkson hockey and all of the players, coaches, and staff that he spent time with. He was happiest sitting next to his wife and children while enjoying a good meal. Kind, fun, and a little competitive, he loved sports, camping, motorcycles, tinkering around the house, and spending time with his family.
Born on November 7, 1955 to George and Virginia Finch, and brother to Vic (Dorothy) Finch, Jim (Gail) Finch, George (Betty) Finch, and Tom (Shirley) Finch. Rick grew up in Clare, Michigan and had a childhood filled with adventure. He was a musician and athlete - setting the stage for his lifelong love of sports and music.
He married Sherry (Deaton) on September 1, 1979 - but they started dating in 1974, so they get credit for a full fifty years of partnership. They both attended Aquinas College, and lived in a variety of mid-western towns and cities while Rick pursued his medical education and a career that allowed him to regularly feel the adrenaline rush that he loved. They moved to Malone in 1989 where Rick could combine his love of the outdoors and activity with a career in emergency medicine.
Rick is father to Adria Finch (Patrick Engle) and James Finch (Brittnie Finch). He is grandfather to Alesandra Finch (16), Serenity Finch (8), Anderson FinchEngle (6), Lilah Finch (5), and Elin FinchEngle (2). By watching him, Rick's children and grandchildren learned so much about balancing hard work with the things that bring them joy. Consequently they have many of the same interests and skills ranging from home improvement projects, to golf, to watching a car race.
Visitation is at Frary Funeral Home in Malone on Wednesday, January 24 at 1:00 - 3:00 and 5:00 - 7:00. A memorial service is scheduled at the Malone Wesleyan Church on Thursday, January 25 at 11:00. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Rick's name to Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy.

Ai first met Rick as my Orthopedic PA. He was such a wonderful man.I have just found out about his passing. He followed my nephews through their Minor Hockey,College and start of their NHL careers. He was the first person that my nephew Jordan Greenway had me give his USA Olympic Men's HockeyTeam pin to. May you know how much our family respected him both as a friend and PA.

My deepest condolences to Rick's family, friends and co-workers. I knew Rick through ski patrol and worked with him from time to time. He was quick to respond and to provide invaluable information in any situation. During refresher courses, he was a great one to sit beside as he could always confirm or explain the scenarios presented to us. A tragic loss for all who knew him.

Rick cared so much for his coworkers and patients. He was never to busy to visit and say hi. He may have struggled with our EMR but he was always quick with a thank you and a smile when he got his orders in. I will miss working with you and proud to have called you a friend!

I had the honor of meeting and working with this amazing, caring, intelligent, and talented man at the end of his career in ortho. I enjoyed both Rick Flare and Rick Rude, any day he was in the office made my day better. I had the honor of celebrating his retirement with him and his amazing family. He will be beyond missed and forever remain in the hearts of so many, myself included. Heaven has gained another angel before anyone here was ready.

I met Rick in 2013 at CPH orthopedics when him and Dr Berard came to work for CPH. We shared so many good laughs and at age 40 taught me to ski and was sure to give me ride on the Harley after a long day of dragon boat racing! We joked as the computer was often his worst nightmare- Rick Rude or Rick Flare was a joke we shared depending on how the computers were going who was in office that day! Even after his retirement and me leaving ortho we remained close and the memories will always bring a smile to my face. He loved going to Taladaga with the guys and oh the stories he could tell and how proud he was when Jimmy got married. He was a man of many talents who cherished his family and friends! I´m sure you´re sharing a cold one with Dr Berard - watching over us all. Two great men gone way too soon.
