Richard Elijah Flack

Richard Elijah Flack, of Castroville, passed away November 2, 2024 at the age of 89. He was born January 28, 1935 in Galesburg, Illinois to John Eli Flack and Mildred Diamond Flack.
Richard graduated from Knoxville High School in Knoxville, Illinois. He enlisted in the United States Navy on April 2, 1952. During this time he served as an aircraft mechanic on the USS Intrepid, working on piston aircraft and some of the earliest jet aircraft in the fleet. After completing his service in the Navy, he then flew helicopters for the Texas Army National Guard and Reserve and retired as a Chief Warrant Officer in 1995. Richard also served on the San Antonio Police Department for over 20 years as a motorcycle patrol officer and was one of the first helicopter pilots on the force.
On December 31, 1979, Richard married Esther Mae Whatley in San Antonio. They were blessed with forty years of marriage at the time of her passing in 2020.
Survivors include his children, Debra Flack Garcia of San Antonio, Kenneth Barber (Linda) of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, Kelli Bippert (Gene) of Corpus Christi, Rebecca Lopez of San Antonio, and Amy Sauceda (Israel) of Atascosa; fifteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Esther Flack; son, Dean Flack; sister, Ruth Thompson.
Visitation will be Monday, November 18, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home with a Funeral Service at 5:30 p.m. A Committal Service with Military Honors will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas. The funeral procession will depart the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 19th.
