Richard Douglas Garis, born on March 26, 1942, and passing on February 17, 2025, was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a respected member of his community. He was known for his dedication to both God and his country, serving honorably in the U.S. Army as a Vietnam veteran for 32 years, during which he held numerous positions, including Medic in Vietnam and Nurse at Fort Belvoir Hospital. His military service also included a tenure at the Pentagon on the General Staff. Richard's service extended beyond basic duties; he was also a courageous POW during the Vietnam War.

Richard's commitment to his faith was profound; he read his Bible daily and cherished his membership in the Masonic Lodge, reflecting his values and principles throughout his life. He had a passion for exploring history through reading and continuous learning. His love for the outdoors was evident in his enjoyment of golf, bass fishing, and hunting—all activities that brought him joy, especially when shared with family.

He enjoyed traveling, particularly to explore small towns, antique shops, and beloved coffee shops. Family was at the heart of Richard's life, and he greatly anticipated every gathering, generously sharing his love with all who surrounded him. His legacy is further enriched by his relationships with his eleven great-grandchildren, whose laughter and joy filled his heart with pride.

Richard is survived by his loving wife, Donna Garis; his stepdaughter, Ami M. Waldron and husband, Street Overstreet; his stepson, John Waldron, and Jodi Groth; and his two sons, Brian and Mike Garis. He was a cherished grandfather to Bradlee and Kayla Donahue, Kiersten Elsesser and husband, William, Andrew Donahue, Ashley Simmons, Brittany Waldron with Christopher Brown, and Leighanne Waldron with Jerrica Kanode; nieces, Donna McGhee and Carol Taormina; special cousin, Edward Smith and many extended family members and friends. His memory will also be lovingly carried on by his eleven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, James Garis and Madeleine Zellner Garis; brother, Donald J. Garis and grandson, Codey W. Donahue.
