Richard "Sarge" G. Garrett, 79, of Salesville, passed away Thursday (January 1, 2026) at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born November 21, 1946 in Sand Fork WV, son of the late Loda Guy Garrett and Tressie (Minney) Garrett. He earned his B.A. from the University of Maryland.
Richard was a US Army veteran, retiring after proudly serving his country for 27 ½ years and earning the rank of Regimental Sergeant Major. He was a member of the Byesville VFW Post 3760 and served as the Commander for twelve years.
He enjoyed working on old cars, especially his two '55 Chevys. He also loved hunting and fishing whenever he could. He was a member of the Cambridge Eagles Aerie # 386.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Waitman Harold Queen.
Richard is survived by his wife, Audra (Dickie) Garrett, whom he married January 25, 1969; two daughters, Carla Rae (& Robert) Davel of Plato MO and Sonja Marie (& Thomas) Casey of Byesville; a brother, Bruce (& Bonnie) Garrett of Flower WV; a sister, Marty Garrett of Sand Fork WV; a grandson, Owen Thomas Casey of Byesville; and several nieces & nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Black-Epperson Funeral Home, Byesville, on Saturday (January 10, 2026) at 2 p.m. with Jim Gibson officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Guernsey County Veteran Council.

Audra, I am so sorry for your loss. I have so many great memories of growing up and going to school with Richard, Bruce and Marty. So glad we got to see you at the reunion last June. Please know our thoughts are with you and the girls. God bless!
