Richard Gillingham Obituary Richard M. "Gilly" Gillingham, 81, of Houston, passed away peacefully, Sunday, October 27, 2024, in Concordia Hospice of Washington, Donnell House, with his family by his side.
He was born March 17, 1943, in Benwood, WV, a son of the late Joseph Gillingham and Louise Duncan Gillingham Zipko and her husband John who raised Richard.
Gilly was a graduate of Trinity High School. Following high school, he had worked for Plasteel and Washington Penn Plastics both of Washington. Once he retired, he became a bus driver and worked for Schweinebraten Bus Co. as well as others until this school year.
Richard was a veteran, having served with the US Army and the Army National Guard.
Gillys memberships included the Fraternal Order of Bears Den #83 in Meadow Lands, White Eagles and VFW Post 191 in Canonsburg, American Legion Post #902 in Houston and the Canonsburg and Anawanna Sportsmans Clubs.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and Pittsburgh Steeler fan, but most of all, he enjoyed spending time with family, especially his grandchildren and his dog and faithful companion, Nova.
On January 13, 1977, he married Marjorie "Sis" Whitfield Chappel who died October 28, 2002.
Surviving are three children, William Chappel (Brandy) of Washington; Ronald Chappel (Patti) of Meadow Lands and Stacey Chappel (Victor Petronka) of Houston; three grandsons, Ryan Chappel (Courtney), Richard Trybend (Breanna) and Colton Petronka; four great grandchildren, Hunter, Grayson, Hudson and Lincoln; two sisters, Elaine Dodd of Lawrenceville, GA and Ruthann Minton (Ray) of Rochester Hills, MI; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased in addition to his parents are a son, David Chappel, two grandsons, Cody and David; four sisters; and a brother.
Friends will be received from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 Friday in the McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, Owner/Supervisor, 27 Cherry Ave., Houston, PA 15342, where services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 2, 2024. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray. Full Military rites will be accorded by the Honor Guard from VFW Post 191 in Canonsburg and the US Army.
