Richard Grenz Obituary

Richard "Dick" Grenz was born on October 18th, 1940 in Tower City, ND, the son of Gottlieb and Lydia (Schock) Grenz. He attended Tower City (ND) Public School where he excelled in sports, football, basketball and track; he graduated in May 1960.

On July 6th, 1960 he joined the US Army, 18th Airborne Artillery Corp, Fort Bragg, NC. He earned his Parachutist Badge, Good Conduct Medal and was very proud of his jump record. He participated in the Special Forces demonstrations during President Kennedy's visit on October 12, 1961. He was honorably discharged on July 6th, 1962.

Following his discharge, he returned to Valley City, ND and worked several jobs until he began his long career working for Wick Construction starting in 1968 until his retirement in 2008.

He married Judith "Judy" Eggert at Trinity Lutheran Church in Valley City, ND on August 10, 1963. They made their home in Valley City and raised 3 sons, Bradley, Robert & Ryan.

He was a lifetime member of the Am Vets Willis Webber Post 3 having joined in 1976. He was involved with Honor Guard, Color Guard and had served terms as State Provost Marshall and Commander. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 60, Eagles Aerie 2192 and member of Trinity Lutheran Church, all in Valley City.

Dick died at the North Dakota Veterans Home on January 1, 2025. He is survived by his wife, Judy; sons, Bradley (Susan), Fargo, ND; Robert (Carol) Oriska, ND; Ryan (Danielle) Valley City, ND; six grandchildren, Sarah (Jordan) Albright, Hiawatha, IA; Matthew Grenz, Colombus, OH; Amanda (Shane) Olaufson, Valley City, ND; Rochelle Grenz, Fargo, ND; Hailley Grenz and Cody Grenz, Valley City, ND; five great-grandchildren, Jayden, Teagan, Calvin, Oakley & Miles; Sisters, Annitha Plecity of Valley City, and Anne (Jack) Myers of Cedar Rapids, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bill, Jake, Ed, Wally and Fred; and sisters, Erma Grenz, Tillie Hoff, Mathilda Roberts, Ruth Fisher, Esther Kringler, Helen Christensen, Irene James and Edna Sheldon.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, January 9, 2025 at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo, with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Fargo National Cemetery at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 10 at Fargo National Cemetery, Harwood, ND.

Dick was a school classmate from 1st grade until high school graduation in Tower City. He was a fun-loving and trust-worthy friend all those years.
