Richard Haggerty Obituary
LATHAM - Richard "Rich" Francis Haggerty, 83, of Latham, N.Y., passed away on November 9, 2025, at St. Peter's Hospital. Born on December 18, 1941 in Brooklyn, N.Y., Rich was the son of the late Edward M. and Gertrude E. (Goeckeritz) Haggerty. He was the beloved husband of Elizabeth A. (Marchant) Haggerty for 54 years.
Rich was raised in Albany and graduated from Vincentian High School in 1959. He continued his education and graduated from Siena College in 1963 and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1968. He worked at the Watervliet Arsenal for over 36 years, primarily at Benet Laboratories as a programmer/systems analyst, and later as Chief of the Automation Management Branch.
Rich had many interests in life, including classic cars, traveling, boating and golfing, to name a few. However, his true passion was spending time with family and friends. For the past 15 years, Rich and Betty were snowbirds in Orlando, Fla., where they developed many more great friendships and a love for bocce! Rich was a devout Catholic, and an active member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Latham N.Y.
Rich was predeceased by his two brothers, Edward R. Haggerty ,and John P. Haggerty. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty); and his three children, Patrick Haggerty, Kathleen Haggerty Torrey (Michael), Michael Haggerty; grandchildren, Finn Torrey and Ciara Torrey. Also survived by sisters-in-law, Nancy Haggerty, Mary Lettieri, Jean Petrilak, Debra Marchant; brother-in-law, Harry von Rogov; as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews
Relatives and friends are invited to call on November 16, 2025, from 2 to 4:00 p.m., at New Comer Funeral Home, 181 Troy-Schenectady Rd., Watervliet, N.Y. 12189. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, November 17, 9 a.m., St. Ambrose Church, Latham, N.Y. 12110. Interment will follow at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, 2501 Troy-Schenectady Rd, Niskayuna, N.Y. 12309. In Lieu of Flowers, donations can be made to St. Ambrose Food Pantry, 347 Old Loudon Rd., Latham, N.Y. 12110, or the Regional Food Bank, 965 Albany Shaker Rd., Latham N.Y. 12110.

Rich was one of those rare people who could light up a room just by walking in. His gentle but quick sense of humor that was never negative which is my greatest memory. I always felt blessed to have known him.

When I was starting my career in computer programming back in the mid-80s, Rich was my instructor at Siena College teaching Fortran. He was a good teacher and I learned a lot from him. My dad, Clarke G. Homan worked at the Benet Weapons Lab as a research physicist, and spoke very highly of Rich who was also working at the lab. Sadly, most if not all of the people that worked in the lab at this time have passed, including my dad and now Rich. Rich was also working good guy.

Sorry for your lose. Rich was one of the nicest guys I've ever known. Never had a bad word to say about anyone. Always cheerful and ready with a joke or two. Stayed in touch with him through emails. After golf i couldn't wait to get back to the clubhouse to hear about his round... of jokes. I'll miss you buddy

We were extremely sorry to hear that hat Rich passed. He was a wonderful person. We had lots of fun and laughs with Rich and Betty in Florida and upstate NY. Rich will truly be missed. Our sincere condolences to the entire family.

To Betty and family....we are so sorry for your loss. We have loved being neighbors with you for 38 years. We will miss seeing Rich puttering around in the yard and always having a cheery hello for us. What a wonderful photo of him you chose. You can see the kindness in his eyes. He was a good man and will be missed by many. Praying for God's comfort for you in the days ahead.
