Richard Harguindeguy transitioned from this life in the early morning hours of January 26, 2026. Born to French immigrants in
Washington, DC. He spent most of his life in the DC area, growing up in Takoma Park and
Silver Spring, MD, but spending the last 30 years living in
Arlington, VA. Richard and his husband recently moved to the area where they have been building a house in Brevard for their retirement years.
He was a proud graduate of Montgomery Blair High School (always clarifying that it was the "old Blair"!) in Silver Spring, and of Northland College in Ashland, WI. While in college, Richard joined the Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity, an organization that became a focal point for the rest of his life. He served on the fraternity foundation and the board of trustees for many years becoming the 36th national president of the fraternity. He was elevated to the Society of Seventeen, the highest honor bestowed by the fraternity to its members.
After college, Richard began a long career in clothing retail, working in management, sales, and as a buyer for such upscale stores as Neiman Markus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, and others. The friendships that Richard cultivated in high school, college, his fraternity, and his co-workers later in life were maintained during his entire life. The comments from these friends all recall how generous Richard was in life, and that he had an infectious (and mischievous) sense of humor. Many people have commented on how much richer their own lives became after meeting Richard.
Richard is survived by his husband Rick Reed who he met in 2004 and married in 2016, his sister Martine Bohn and her husband David, nephew Jason Bohn and his former wife Heather, niece Danielle Lane and her husband George, and six grandnieces/nephews.
A celebration of life in Richard's honor will be held in the summer or early fall in
Brevard, NC. It will model the celebration held for one of Richard's fraternity brothers a few years ago that he found to be profoundly uplifting and moving. It was that gathering that introduced Richard and Rick to Brevard.
