Richard John Harter, known affectionately as Richard to his friends and family, departed this life on April 8, 2025, in his hometown of Deckerville, where he was also born on August 3, 1944. Richard's journey through life was marked by a steadfast dedication to his family, his work, and the simple pleasures that brought him joy.
Richard's early years were spent in the nurturing arms of Deckerville, where he established a foundation of hard work and community involvement. A proud graduate of Deckerville Community School's class of 1962, he carried the lessons learned there throughout his life. On August 22, 1964, Richard married his beloved Judy Peruski in Palms, and together they embarked on a lifetime of shared dreams and endeavors.
A true son of the soil, Richard was a lifelong farmer, deeply connected to the land he tended. His days were filled with the sounds of cows and hogs, and the sight of bountiful crops reaching for the sun. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to operate a DeLaval Dairy Equipment business and a trucking business, showcasing his versatility and dedication to his community's agricultural roots.
Richard and Judy's commitment to service extended beyond the fields; they owned and operated an assisted living home for several years, providing care and compassion to those in their twilight years. This endeavor was a testament to Richard's generous heart and Judy's nurturing spirit.
Among his many passions, Richard was an avid restorer of antique tractors and guns, a hobby that reflected his love for history and mechanics. His spirited nature was also evident in his latest endeavor-raising Texas longhorn cows, an undertaking that combined his passion for agriculture with the excitement of working with such iconic animals.
Richard's legacy is carried on by his devoted wife Judy, who stood by his side through all of life's seasons, his sons Gregory (Salina) and Jeffery (Jill), his sister Carol (Don) Rose, and his nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, who will miss their grandfather's lively spirit and boundless enthusiasm. His loyal black Lab, Cash, will also feel the absence of his loving master. Richard was preceded in death by his parents Nicholas and Mary (Merkler) Harter, and his sisters Doris Coon, Kathleen Gerber, and Mary Ann Stone.
The family will be laying Richard to rest in Deckerville, at Downing Cemetery after a Mass of the Christian Burial is said at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Palms. Fr. Sunil Pallella will officiate on Friday at 11:00 am April 11, 2025. The visitation will be from 9:00-11:00 am prior to the Mass on Friday.
Memorial donations may be given to Downing Cemetery.
