Herman J. Behnke Jr., a cherished soul of the Sandusky and Deckerville community, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2025, at his home in Sandusky, Michigan, at the age of 90. Born on March 26, 1935, in Forestville, MI, Herman's life was a testament to his unwavering strength, generous heart, and the deep bonds he forged throughout his years.

Herman's journey began as a young boy in Forestville, where he attended local schools and laid the groundwork for a life full of dedication and service. His commitment to his country was evident through his service in the US Army, and upon returning to civilian life, he devoted over four decades to Deckerville Di-Form, where his work ethic and camaraderie with colleagues were unmatched.

Herman's life was graced by the love of his life, Helen (Loeffler) Behnke, with whom he shared countless memories until her passing on April 5, 2007. Together, they raised a family that included their daughter, JoAnn Dickens, and son, Glenn Behnke, who preceded him in death. Herman's legacy continued through his six grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, each of whom he adored and instilled with his values of hard work, integrity, and the joy of simple pleasures.

An avid outdoorsman, Herman's passion for hunting and fishing was known to all. His tales of deer and bear hunting adventures were not only stories of his exploits but also of the camaraderie and friendships he cherished. Playing cards was another pastime that brought Herman joy and laughter, often shared with his dear friends Larry (Big Foot) and Suzette Vogel.

Herman's presence was a constant in the lives of those who knew him. His laughter was infectious, his advice was sought after, and his willingness to lend a hand was legendary. He was a man who valued the richness of relationships above all else, and his impact on his family and friends was profound and enduring.

As we bid farewell to Herman J. Behnke Jr., we celebrate a life well-lived. His journey was one of love, loyalty, and the kind of enduring spirit that leaves an indelible mark on the world. Herman's memory will be treasured in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him, and his stories will continue to inspire and bring smiles to faces for generations to come.

In honoring Herman's well-lived life, there will be a funeral service on Monday August 18, 2025, in the Apsey Funeral Home. Burial will be in Downing Cemetery.
