Dover, NH - Richard Gregg Hayward, 78, of
Dover, NH passed away on Monday, December 18 in
Dover, New Hampshire at Wentworth Douglass Hospital.
He was born November 2nd, 1945 in
Oberlin, Ohio to Sumner and Lucy Hayward.
He graduated from Beloit Memorial High School in
Beloit, WI and the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire with a Bachelors in Journalism.
He was a lifelong journalist and photographer. He worked for Foster's Daily Democrat in many different roles for 40 years. His interest in people, their intricate lives and deep sense of community drove him to work hard each day to bring news to the people. He was also a talented poet and authored a book of poetry called New England Harmony.
He also served the community on boards of local nonprofits including New Hampshire Challenge and Northam Colonists.
Richard lived a life of selflessness. Caring deeply for his wife, Cathy and his children. He loved to read, write, hike, take walks, swim, and spend time with his family and friends. His father, Sumner, was a psychology professor who taught at various small liberal arts colleges, so his family moved around the country throughout his childhood. Richard particularly loved the time his family lived in
Beloit, Wisconsin.
Richard also lived a life of adventure. He fondly remembered his time playing outside with his brothers and sister, kids and grandchildren, attending Outward Bound, biking in Europe, road-tripping with his son across the country, and flying down hills on all sorts of sleds and memorably a shovel.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Sumner and Lucy Hayward and his twin brother Webster who lived for 4 days. He is survived by his wife of 43 years Catherine F. Hayward, son Gregg and his wife Michelle, his daughter Casie and her husband Shawn. His grandchildren Amity, Toby, Jordy, and Eddy. His brother Charley and his wife Vanessa, his sister Harriet, and his brother Scott and his wife Tina. His cousins Tom and his wife Sibylle and Chuck and his wife Berit and his many nieces and nephews.
Nearing his death, Richard will be remembered for saying, "There is no end to love." He clearly lived his life in this manner each day.
