Richard John Henke, a cherished family man, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2026 in
Brewster, NY, at the age of 88. Born on April 5, 1937 in
the Bronx, NY, to the late Howard and Henrietta (Seebeck) Henke Sr. He was predeceased by his brother, Howard Henke Jr. and sister, Dorothy Grant as well as two nephews, Laird Grant and Kenneth Henke.
With his wife of 63 years, Eileen (Himics) Henke, he shared a deep and enduring bond. She was his soulmate, and together they built a life based on unwavering love, partnership, and mutual respect. He was a true gentleman, an old-fashioned man who loved unconditionally and respected all. Their love story was one for the ages, with every chapter written side by side.
Richard's legacy continues through his children and their spouses Chad (Sonja), Suzanne (Tom), and Todd (Maureen) as well as his grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Grandchildren Robyn (Michael), Shane (Marnie), Thomas Chad, Richard (Tori), Chelsea (Matthew), Christopher, Madalyn, and great-grandchildren Finn, Ethan, Skylar, and Carter each carry forward his spirit, joy, and the deep love he held for his family. Family was the cornerstone of Richard's world. He relished in the moments spent with his loved ones, especially a lively family gathering filled with laughter. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought him immeasurable happiness and pride as he reveled in their accomplishments and adventures.
His professional life was defined by his work as the owner of the Patterson Woodbench in
Patterson, NY. His carpentry was more than a business; it was an outlet for his remarkable creativity and craftsmanship. He gave generously of his time and leadership from his years of service in the New York Army National Guard to his local involvement as Charter President of the Patterson Rotary Club and as a Board Member of the Cornell Cooperative Extension leaving a lasting impact on his community.
Upon Richard's retirement, he continued the joy of playing golf with friends old and new. He also came to appreciate the pleasure of relaxing with a good book.
His was a life lived with purpose and passion, a life that left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to have known him. Richard's life does not end with his passing but continues in the lives of those he loved and the community he served. His was one well-lived, full of moments that will be treasured and stories that will be told for generations to come.
A Mass of Christian Burial to honor and celebrate Richard's life will be held at St. Lawrence O'Toole Church in the spring. Private interment will follow.
