Richard Johnson Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jan. 16, 2026.
Richard (Dick) Stephen Johnson, 81, of Montgomery, Texas passed away peacefully on January 15, 2026, after a short illness, surrounded by his loving family.

Dick was born on January 21, 1944 in Wausau, Wisconsin to Merle and Gertrude (Perske) Johnson. After Gertrude passed away, Merle married Florence (Yonker) and they later moved to Albany, New York where he spent much of his happy childhood.

He moved back to Wausau when he started college and met his beloved wife of 59 years, Joan (Lutz). He graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater with a degree in accounting. He and Joan then moved to the East Coast (New Jersey and then Maryland) where he spent his accounting career with several firms in various industries including defense, manufacturing, call center, and funeral home. He went on to earn his M.B.A. from Loyola University Maryland. He also served in the Air Force Reserves. When it came time to retire, they moved to the Woodforest community in Montgomery, Texas to be near his son Steve and their family.

He was an active member of Rotary International and served as President and Treasurer of the Salisbury, Maryland chapter. He also served as Treasurer of the Senior Pals group of the St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.

Dick was known for his wit and quick sense of humor, always ready with a well-placed Dad joke and a clever pun. He cherished time with his wife, 2 children and their spouses, 5 grandchildren, and dog Roxy. He was a talented golfer with a prized hole in one trophy. He was an avid reader and loved adding voices and taking creative license as he read stories to his grandchildren. He was a sports enthusiast playing basketball and baseball and cheering on the Wisconsin Badgers, Green Bay Packers, Baltimore Orioles as well as attending lots of family concerts, sporting events, and recitals. He enjoyed many types of music especially Neil Diamond and Dave Brubeck. He traveled to Norway to celebrate his heritage and 75th birthday. His kind heart, warm smile, and generous spirit will be greatly missed.

Dick is survived by his loving wife, Joan Johnson; his children, Laura Hynes and husband Bill, and Stephen Johnson and wife Robyn; grandchildren, Conor and Abby Hynes and Katie, Logan and Ella Johnson; and his sister, Elizabeth (Beth) Winstedt and husband Dave.

A funeral Mass will be held at the Our Lady of the Angels Chapel at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church (8715 Kuykendahl Rd, The Woodlands, TX 77382) on Friday, February 13 at 1:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society to support Melanoma Research or Saint Anthony of Padua, the Woodlands.
