Richard J. Kazdan, a culinary maestro and a beacon of warmth in the lives of those who knew him, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2025, in Aurora, Illinois. Born on July 13, 1965, in Park Ridge, Illinois, Richard's zest for life and his passion for cooking began to simmer early on, leading him to a path where he touched countless hearts and taste buds.
After graduating from Niles North High School and spending some time at Triton College, Richard's culinary journey truly began at the prestigious Culinary Institute of America, where he honed his skills and later became a certified Culinary Foundations Trainer. His career started at the charming Café Pierre, a tiny French restaurant where he first showcased his creative flair. Richard's love for vibrant flavors led him to El Torito Mexican Restaurants, where he spent 12 years in management, immersing himself in Mexican food culture and leaving a lasting impact with his innovative dishes.
Richard's professional life was marked by his dedication and passion for the culinary arts. His journey with Chipotle Mexican Grill as a District Manager was a testament to his leadership and vision, as he played a pivotal role in introducing the brand to the Chicago area. Under his guidance, numerous Chipotle locations sprouted across Illinois, and his influence helped shape the company into the household name it is today.
Alongside his treasured partner of over 20 years, Sharon Kazdan, Richard co-owned the Monkey McGee Salsa & Sauce Company, where his creativity and passion for flavors continued to thrive. Together, they crafted a legacy of taste and entrepreneurship that will be savored for generations.
Richard was the beloved son of the late Kalman and Sheila Sinton, a cherished brother to Frank (Michelle) Sinton, and a doting uncle to Jeremy (Taylor), Ryan, and Brooke Sinton. He was also a proud great-uncle to Gemma. His role as a "Daddy" to his cats, Chili and Pepper, showcased his thoughtful and nurturing spirit, which extended beyond his human family.
Described by those who knew him as creative, passionate, and thoughtful, Richard's legacy is not only in the dishes he crafted but also in the love and care he poured into every aspect of his life. His ability to blend flavors on a plate was matched by his ability to bring people together, creating a community wherever he went.
Richard's influence extended beyond the kitchen, as he was always eager to participate in food trainings and competitions, sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with peers and protégés alike. His commitment to culinary excellence and his ability to inspire those around him will be deeply missed.
As we bid farewell to Richard J. Kazdan, we celebrate a life richly lived and a man dearly loved. His memory will continue to inspire and his recipes will remain a testament to his extraordinary talent. Richard's presence will be profoundly missed, but his culinary legacy and the joy he brought to so many will continue to be cherished.
In the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him, Richard's spirit will continue to simmer like a pot of his beloved salsa - with just the right blend of spice, warmth, and love.

My thoughts and prayers are with Ricks family. I meet Rick many years ago and I remember his sense of humor and he was an all around great guy. So sad gone way to soon.
