Richard Lanning Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 4, 2026.
Richard Springen Lanning, known as Dick, passed away on January 22nd, 2026 in Tucson, Arizona. For the days leading up to his passing, he was surrounded by his family who provided him support and care during this transition. His family and friends miss him dearly, but they also rejoice that he did not have to suffer through a long and arduous decline.

Dick is survived by his close family that includes: his wife, Candace Walters; sons, Matt and Rory; daughter-in-law, Lindsay; and grandchildren, Lyla and Ryder. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Lyle and Erma Lanning, Aunt, Irene Wyland, and Uncles, Ray and Allan Springen. He was born on November 12th, 1940, in Hannibal, Missouri and spent considerable time in Mayville, North Dakota and Minneapolis, Minnesota. He committed to his country as a Naval Aviation Officer and flew in the Vietnam War. He loved the mountains and communities in Aspen and Telluride, Colorado where he raised his sons and worked as a ski instructor, shop owner and coach. In his later years in Tucson, Arizona, he managed his wife's top-notch orthodontics business and real estate investments. Eventually, Dick retired and focused his energy supporting local community associations, traveling with his wife and visiting with family. He never stopped thinking about improving the community and supporting his family.

Dick remained strong through all the years and enjoyed many activities to keep him busy like skiing, tennis, biking, golf, boating, motorcycling, car projects, and home renovation. His mind was always clear, and he kept a positive attitude until the very end. Family and friends will remember him for his energetic approach, positive attitude, and support for family and community. He will be missed and hope that each of you can take some powder turns or cruise the open road for him.
