I met Rick around fifty years ago when he was hitchhiking near (the former) Carter Junior High on West Street in Leominster, and appeared to be just another “ordinary looking” teenager ... with a thick mustache, long sideburns and shoulder length hair wearing a turtleneck sweater with bell bottoms pants - and probably a pair of Tom Mcan square toed boots ... walking backwards and thumbing a ride on the side of the road as was customary in those days.
I pulled over to pick him up and after Rick said thanks he flashed the exact same well known smile that we can still presently see in this photo - and I will always recall him frequently having on his face.
From that very first time we met, Rick gave the impression he’d make a really good friend ... and he later became a great one to me during our twenty-something youth as he happened to date and become engaged to a close family member of mine.
Rick was genuine, curious, generous and friendly, but also unabashed (when challenged) in displaying the diversity of his knowledge on a myriad of topics without trying to sound phony-humble.
I had the honor of being his best man and the privilege of being the Godfather to his remarkable son, Michael; who also became friends (mischievous playmates) with my own remarkable son, Michael.
I regretfully lost touch with Rick after he remarried, and especially after he retired and moved out of state; however, another regret is that I usually brushed off his repeated offers to teach me how to successfully invest long term in the 1973-1974 stock market crash (my bad) ...
Merci beaucoup, mon ami Richard Leclerc: For “turning me on” to some really good belly laughs; for introducing me to a lot of interesting music and legendary musicians (on vinyl albums, eight track tapes, compact cassettes, and live at the Boston Arena); for sharing one (Virginia) or two (Niagara Falls) adventurous road trips; for more than a few marathon game nights (teaching me how to strategically play - and win! - the board game of Risk); and, of course, for all the heartfelt smiles. RIP
