Richard MacFarline Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Doherty Funeral Homes, Inc. - Pike Creek on Feb. 16, 2026.
Richard MacFarline, 96, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2026. A proud Navy veteran, businessman, and lifelong Philadelphia sports fan, Dick lived a life defined by family, loyalty and a nearly century-long legacy of service and connection.

Born in Philadelphia in 1929, Dick grew up in the city before answering the call to serve his country. He served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Midway during its formative years as the pride of the Atlantic Fleet. It was while his ship was homeported in Norfolk, VA, that a visit to a local USO changed the course of his life. There, he met Millie, the woman who would become his beloved wife and the heart of his family for decades to come.

Following his discharge, Dick built a career in sales before becoming a local businessman, owning and operating his own hearing aid business in Newark until his retirement. A resident of Wilmington, DE for over 50 years, Richard was a man of steady habits and deep friendships. For years, he could be found twice a week at Dunkin' Donuts, sharing coffee and conversation with his close circle of friends.

A passionate sports fan, Dick remained a devoted "Philly" guy at heart. He was a huge Eagles fan, never missing a game, and closely followed the Phillies and Villanova basketball. Whether at the coffee shop or at home with family, he was always ready to discuss the latest game.

Dick was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mildred MacFarline. He is survived by his four children: Elizabeth Morett (Bill), Susan Fletcher (Deane), Rick MacFarline, and John MacFarline (Dawn). He was a cherished grandfather to Laura, Bill, and Brad (Katie), who will forever remember his stories of the Midway, his love for sports and the quiet, steady kindness he modeled for 96 years.

A funeral service will be celebrated at 12:30pm on Monday, February 23, 2026, at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808, where family and friends may visit beginning at 11:00am. Interment will be held in All Saints Cemetery,

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a local veterans association in Dick's name.
