Richard Masartis Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Dooley Colonial Home - Westfield on Dec. 29, 2025.
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Thomas Masartis, age 83, of Clark, who passed away on December 25, 2025, at Overlook Hospital in Summit, with his loving family by his side. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Richard was the son of the late Albert and Stella Masartis.
Rich lived a life defined by loyalty, steadiness, and quiet joy. He proudly served in the United States Army, a reflection of his strong sense of duty and commitment. He was a lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan and shared that passion wholeheartedly with his wife, Joyce. He found peace and purpose in tending to his vegetable garden, reading, and participating in Civil War reenacting, pursuits that reflected his appreciation for history, patience, and tradition. Later in life, Rich and Joyce learned to play the dulcimer together and discovered a deep love of music. They especially cherished their weekend dulcimer retreats, where they spent time learning, playing, and enjoying music side by side. These moments became some of his most treasured memories.
Besides his parents, Rich was predeceased by the love of his life, Joyce, in 2021, as well as his brothers, Walter and Robert Masartis. He is survived by his beloved daughters, Mary Lugli (Jean-Claude) and Kathleen O'Holla (Robert); his cherished grandchildren, Caelan, Daniel, Matthew, Michael, Matthew, Layla, and Bobby, who were the lights of his life; his sister, Marlene Boronyak (Ken); and many nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart.
To know Rich was to know steadiness, loyalty, and a love that did not need many words. He showed his care through consistency, presence, and devotion to his family. His absence is deeply felt, and his loss leaves a quiet and lasting ache in the hearts of those who loved him.
Friends may visit the family on Friday, January 2, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Dooley Colonial Home in Westfield. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Mountainside. Burial with military honors will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Dad, "What's up, buttercup?" will forever echo in our hearts. We will miss you more than words can ever say. Thank you for your quiet strength, your unwavering love, and the life you built for us. We carry you with us always.
