Richard "Rich" Gene McBrien, 75, of Volga, SD passed away Thursday, June 20, 2024. Memorial Services have been set for 10:30am Friday, June 28, 2024 at Rude's Funeral Home, Brookings, SD. Memorial Visitation will be from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Thursday, June 27, 2024 at Rude's Funeral Home. Burial will be at the South Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Sioux Falls, SD.
Richard "Rich" Gene McBrien was born April 29, 1949 in McCook, NE the son of William H and Arlene Elizabeth (Hendren) McBrien. He grew up and attended school in Watertown, SD, graduating from Watertown High School in 1967. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Army. He served in Thailand and Vietnam during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1970.
After returning from service in the Army, he lived in Sioux Falls and worked at Ravens. He then moved to Watertown, SD and worked at Minnesota Rubber for over 25 years. He then moved to Volga, SD where he worked at several places including South Dakota State University in the Maintenance Department until his retirement.
Rich was a member of the Volga American Legion Post #74.
Rich loved riding his Harley Davidson Motorcycle, going metal detecting, he loved photography and enjoyed taking pictures of wildlife as well as enjoying hunting and fishing. He was a storyteller and loved telling stories to family and friends. He lived life to the fullest and lived it on his terms.
He will forever love his dog, Peanut.
Grateful for having shared his life are his life are his children, Bill (Suzie) McBrien of Watertown, SD, Rebecca (Cassie) Forster of Moorhead, MN and Jeramie (Amber) McBrien of Brookings, SD; his grandchildren, Bill McBrien Jr, Stephen McBrien, Sarah McBrien, Daniel Wittrock, Joey McBrien, Jacob McBrien, Harley McBrien, Austin McBrien, Mason McBrien, Nicholas McBrien and Bianca McBrien.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Charlene Arneson and his brother, Ron McBrien.
