Richard Edward "Dick" McCarraher, a man of deep faith and unwavering devotion to his family, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2025, in Apex, North Carolina, after a short illness at the age of 89. Born on March 28, 1935, he was the cherished son of Edward McCarraher and Sophie (Wischuck) McCarraher.
Dick grew up in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, surrounded by the love of his extended family of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He graduated from Scott High School in Coatesville in 1953 and went on to serve his country with honor as a member of the 101st Airborne Division in the United States Army for four years. He then built a successful career in the steel industry as a salesman at G.O. Carlsons, Inc., in Thorndale, Pennsylvania, where he worked for almost four decades until his retirement in 1997.
Known for his warm personality and ability to connect with others effortlessly, Richard never met a stranger and was a faithful friend to many. His genuine kindness left an indelible mark on all who crossed his path. He had many passions that brought joy to his life-especially big band music and antique cars- but nothing compared to his love of God and family.
A man deeply rooted in faith, Dick was an active member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Coatesville and later St. Andrew Catholic Church in Apex. A Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and former Grand Knight, his spiritual commitment and dedication to service was evident in every aspect of his life and provided inspiration to those around him.
Dick was a devoted husband to his wife Diane Stringer McCarraher. His love for her only grew with time and the two were rarely seen apart. He was an amazing father to his three children and is survived by his son Michael McCarraher and daughter Cynthia Fendrick (Michael). He was predeceased by his beloved daughter Margaret but found solace in the enduring love of his family. His grandchildren- Courtney, Lauren, Christina, Jack, Grace, Caroline, Kate, and Claire- and great-granddaughter, Ellie, were sources of immense pride and joy for him. Affectionately known as "Bop", he spent much of his retirement attending numerous sporting events, plays, and concerts as well as always being the first to suggest grabbing a bite to eat together. His family was the center of his world-he showed them every day that he loved them all deeply.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, January 31st at 11:00 AM at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Apex, North Carolina. Inurnment will follow immediately after the service. All are invited to attend a reception afterward in the Fellowship Hall to share a meal and warm memories of Dick.
In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made in his memory to St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Apex or Transitions LifeCare of Raleigh.
May Richard Edward McCarraher rest eternally in peace with God's grace surrounding him always as those who loved him carry forward his legacy of faithfulness, kindness, friendship, and love. https://www.wesharegiving.org/app/giving/WeShare-1924?tab=home https://www.transitionslifecare.org/donate/
