SOMERSWORTH, N.H. – Richard S. McHugh, 90, of Somersworth passed away Saturday, January 11, 2025, at Mountain View Community in Ossipee, NH.
Richard McHugh, born April 26, 1934, in Sanford, Maine, was the son of the late Irene (Hickey) and George McHugh. The eldest of four siblings, Richard was raised in South Berwick, Maine. He attended Berwick Academy but left early to serve in the Navy during the Korean War. On July 4, 1955, at St. Martin's Church in Somersworth, New Hampshire, he married Muriel (Blanchette), the love of his life for 62 years, who predeceased him in 2017.
Richard and Muriel had three children: Brian McHugh and his wife Diane (Lapointe); Michael McHugh, who passed away in 2020, and his wife Cheryl (April); and Mark McHugh and his wife Bethany (Kidder). He was a proud grandfather to ten grandchildren-Myranda, Jason, Adam, Eric, Stephanie, Josh, Conor, Noah, Brooke, and Mary-Grace-with whom he shared special bonds. Richard also delighted in his thirteen great-grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Brayden, Griffin, Cayden, Logan, Maggie, Lucas, Lucy, Mary, Hazel, Ava, Isla, and Zoey. Additionally, he is remembered by family member Kathy McHugh.
A long-time resident of Somersworth, Richard was an active and faithful parishioner of the St. Ignatius of Loyola community. He owned a small restaurant in South Berwick and later retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion in Rollinsford, New Hampshire. Richard cherished time with his family, enjoying activities such as camping, cookouts, snowmobiling, woodworking, dancing, painting, and beach outings. He also enjoyed traveling to Bermuda, Florida, and Nashville. At the heart of his life was his deep love and devotion to his wife, family, and friends.
SERVICES: A Mass of Catholic burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 10 a.m. at St. Martin's Church, 120 Maple St., Somersworth, N.H. Burial will follow at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Somersworth.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mount Washington Valley, Adult Day Center, 987 East Main Street, Route 113, Center Conway, NH 03813. (mwvadultdaycenter.org)
