Throughout his life, many saw Dick as a grumpy old walrus . However, beneath this exterior was a man with a remarkable sense of humor, known for his ability to tell the lamest of jokes that inevitably elicited laughter from those around him. He was a steadfast and loyal individual, whose commitment to hard work and continuous learning greatly influenced his family. Dick was proud of his identity as a self-proclaimed sea captain, with a deep-seated love for the ocean and lighthouses that reflected his adventurous spirit.
Dick's devotion to his faith was evident from a young age. He dedicated a significant portion of his life to serving Jehovah. After graduating from high school, he spent three transformative months in Guatemala as a volunteer Bible teacher, an experience that profoundly shaped his passion for teaching others about God. For decades, he imparted lessons of faith, strength, and encouragement to not only his family but also countless individuals seeking to deepen their worship.
He is survived by his children, Melissa (Antonio) Duran, Daniel Merrill, Bromley (April) Merrill, and Landen (Coral) Merrill. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Jeryd (Bailee) Duran, Rhesha Duran, Meleah Duran, Terra (Conrad) Nuanes, and Darrin Merrill. Dick was also a proud great-grandfather to Kassidee and Grace Duran, and Olivia and Ellie Nuanes.
He is lovingly remembered by his siblings: Jody (Gabe) Lopez, Earl Merrill, and Kerry Merrill.
Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Susan Merrill, his son, Kalin Merrill and a grandson, Austin Merrill. Their memory will forever be intertwined with the love and laughter that Dick brought into the lives of those fortunate enough to know him.
Services to honor Richard Allen Merrill, Jr. will be held in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where family and friends will gather to celebrate a life well-lived and to reflect on the joy he brought to so many. His presence will be greatly missed, yet his spirit will continue to inspire for years to come.
