Captain Richard "Monty" Allen Montgomery Sr., USMC (Ret.) August 18, 1942 – September 25, 2025 Captain Richard "Monty" Allen Montgomery Sr., USMC (Ret.), 83, of Knoxville, Tennessee, passed away peacefully under hospice care on September 25, 2025. Born August 18, 1942, in Augusta, Georgia, Richard was the son of John Henry and Ruby Lane Montgomery. He graduated from North Augusta High School in North Augusta, South Carolina, in July 1961 and proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps the following month. Richard was a dedicated Marine, rising through the enlisted ranks before being commissioned as a Marine officer (Mustang). His honorable service included two tours in Vietnam and time as a Drill Instructor at Parris Island. Richard retired as a Captain after 23 years of service.
Upon retirement from active duty, Richard had a successful career in the federal civil service, supporting the Marine Corps Maritime Prepositioning Program until his retirement in 2002. A man of steadfast patriotism and service, Richard took great pride in defending the freedoms of his fellow citizens. He was a past Commander of the Screven County, Georgia VFW, a member of the American Legion, the Marine Corps Mustang Association, and the Marine Corps League. He also served his local community as a member of Sylvania Masonic Lodge #301 and Screven County Shrine Club. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, John Henry and Ruby Montgomery; brothers, Charles and Bobby Montgomery; sister, Judy Matthews; and his devoted wife, Faye McBride Montgomery. He is survived by his son, Rick; daughter-in-law, Mikki; granddaughters, Mary-Katherine (Zach Howard) and Paisley Drew Montgomery; great-grandsons, Henry Laurence and Archie Montgomery Howard; and his brother, Billy Montgomery.
