Richard Nelson Obituary

Visit the Mann-Slonaker Funeral Home website to view the full obituary.

Richard D. Nelson, a beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away peacefully with wife Cindy and son Erik by his side on November 27, 2025, at the age of 79. Born in Mansfield, OH, to the late Raymond and Rachel (Sparks) Nelson, Richard spent his early years forging the qualities that would define him: a passion for sports, an unwavering work ethic, and a deep commitment to family.

A 1964 graduate of Wooster High School, Richard was not only an accomplished athlete, participating in football and wrestling, but he also carried the spirit of teamwork and perseverance throughout his life. His 44-year career took him to the Souderton Borough, where he spent years on the road crew before becoming part of the Waste and Water Treatment Department. Richard's dedication to his craft was unparalleled, continuously seeking certifications to improve his skills. He truly embodied the essence of hard work, always ready to lend a hand whenever needed.

An avid sports fan, Richard's passion for softball was unmatched. He played for seven different teams, including The Purple Haze, My Friend's Place, and the Telford VFW. His love for the game extended beyond playing; he also umpired for many years and was instrumental in building the softball fields at the North Penn Gun Club, notably being the first to hit home runs on both fields. Beyond softball, Richard was an avid Ohio State Football fan and enjoyed cycling with friends, often riding 20 miles or more.

Above all his accomplishments, Richard's greatest joy came from his family. He was the devoted husband of Cynthia (Haynes) Nelson for 44 wonderful years and the loving father to Erik Nelson. Richard was a constant source of support and encouragement, always finding ways to teach and uplift Erik, instilling in him the values of hard work, generosity, and invaluable life lessons.

In addition to his wife, Cynthia and son, Erik, he is survived by his grandchildren, Karma Ruth, Noah and Grace; sister, Michelle Roberts and brother in law Jeff Roberts; a brother Raymond Nelson, Jr; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by siblings, Martha Aukerman, Gayle Dennison, Dutch Alexander, Terry Miller and Gary Miller; and Karma Ruth's mother, Kristen Hamilton.

A viewing will be held on Friday, December 5th from 11 AM to 12:15 PM at Mann-Slonaker Funeral Home, 222 Washington St., East Greenville, PA 18041 with a funeral service to follow at 12:30 PM. Burial will be held in Old Goshenhoppen Cemetery in Woxall/Harleysville, PA. You may leave condolences and share memories by visiting www.mannslonakerfuneralhome.com.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to PAWSibilities Animal Rescue, P.O. Box 285, Skippack, PA 19474. In the near future, the Nelson family plans to establish the Richard Nelson Memorial Softball Game.
