Our patriarch, Richard W. Osterhout, journeyed to his glorious forever home on May 2, 2023 at the age of 87.
He cherished his bride of 68 years, 5 children, 13 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Rich was a multifaceted man as they say, but most of all he was a good and faithful servant. He loved the Lord and instilled the love of Jesus in his family and others.
Everything he did in life reflected the devotion to his family; he adored his family. His Lita was the center of his world. His children were his source of pride. His grandchildren were his heart. While they may not remember him playing on the floor with them as babies, his grandkids will look back on the wild tube rides on the lake with Rich at helm, often on his lap "driving", fishing off the dock with Papa, walks with his first great-grandson, and nightly s'mores by the cottage campfire next to him.
All children were the center of his universe. Not only his family, but his love extended far past that. For example, he taught Sunday school and served as superintendent. Also, when Rich pulled up to an Amish farm, the children would run to him. He would engage with the kids and always had candy for them. So guess what they called him? Candy Man.
Rich was a jigsaw puzzle enthusiast, an avid 'garage hopper', never met a garage sale he didn't like, loved a good thrift trip, a book lover devouring books on faith, health, gardening. Rich was an outdoorsman. He loved to garden and golf. The outside was his favorite place to be, puttering in the yard, tending to his flowers and garden, and getting his daily D dose by tanning every day in the morning. This tender-hearted man was known to cry at a sad movie scene and even a Michigan Bell commercial and the Miss America Pageant.
Richard was a carpenter by trade. When you were in Detroit with him and driving, he would point out the buildings on which he worked. Yeah, he built half of Detroit. Rich's work was always done 100%--with hands, head, and heart.
He will be remembered for always having a hanky hanging out of his back jeans pocket, wearing a flannel shirt and donning a baseball cap to complete the ensemble.
He will be remembered for always asking, "What do you need?"
He will be remembered for his kind heart and open arms.
He will be remembered for his laugh. Rich always loved a good dad joke!
It is so difficult to put into words a proper tribute to honor this wonderful man. Husband. Father. Grandfather. Great Grandfather. Candy Man. Story Teller. Cottage Lover. Card Player. Foodie (before that was cool). Superman. Builder. Teacher. Amateur Botanist. Jesus Follower. Man of God. Forever with us.
What a legacy! We will continue to look for his bag of twenties.
