Richard Rulffes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Donaldson-Seymour Funeral Home - Potsdam on Dec. 31, 2025.
PIERREPONT: Richard A. Rulffes, 64, passed away unexpectedly at his home on December 21, 2025. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no formal services. The family will hold a gathering in the spring, where family and friends are welcome to share memories and raise a glass of his favorite bourbon and craft beers.
Rich was a devoted husband and father. He shared 39 years of marriage with his wife, Mary Jo, and together they raised four children. Rich was immensely proud of his family and never missed an opportunity to tell his children how proud he was of the good, hardworking people they became.
Born April 5, 1961, in Baltimore, Maryland, Rich was the son of Alfred and Nancy (Besanceney) Rulffes. He graduated from Shenendehowa High School in Clifton Park and later attended Clarkson University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He married Mary Jo Perry on February 23, 1986, in Hopkinton.
Rich spent many years working for New York State, beginning with the Department of Transportation and later retiring as a mechanical engineer with the Office of General Services. Outside of work, he was always busy improving his home and property, restoring classic trucks in his garage-often alongside his sons, Nick and Ben. He and his wife volunteered with the Australian Cattle Dog Rescue Association. Rich also enjoyed collecting vintage toy cars and classic car memorabilia and was a proud Clarkson alumnus and loyal Golden Knights hockey fan.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Jo; his children and their spouses, Michael (Angela) Rulffes of Potsdam, Nicholas (Chelsea) Rulffes of Canton, Ashley (Joshua) Einhorn of Louisville, Colorado, and Benjamin Rulffes of Edwards; his grandchildren, Madelynn, Evelyn, Dahlia, Annalee, Ella, Ethan, Cooper, Coleson, Crew, and Calla; his parents, Alfred and Nancy Rulffes of Mechanicville, New York; his sisters, Cynthia Rulffes of Clifton Park and Donna Valente of Orlando, Florida; and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may consider memorial contributions in his memory to the Australian Cattle Dog Rescue Association (www.acdra.org)
