Richard Neal Sandlin, age 79, born in Miami, Florida in 1945 to Walter Lee Sandlin and Melissa Ruth Sandlin passed away January 14, 2025. Even as a child he showed a passion for history, art, and photography. Richard graduated from the University of Miami where he attended Army ROTC and commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. After graduation, he was assigned to the Department of the Army Special Photographic Office where he led photography and film teams documenting the Vietnam War. After the military, Richard's love of history and beautiful landscapes took him to Colorado where he earned a second degree from Fort Lewis College. Over the years he lived in Durango, Mancos, Cortez, and finally Albuquerque, where he worked as a photographer, artist, park ranger, professional driver, and tour guide. Through his extensive knowledge and enthusiastic storytelling, countless people gained a deeper appreciation for the Great American Southwest.
He is survived by his son, John Sandlin and his partner, Ally Lowry; daughter, Richenda Sandlin-Tymitz and her husband, Peter Tymitz; granddaughter, Margaret Elizabeth Sandlin; and longtime partner, Fran Roggen.
