Richard "Dick" Segelke was born April 5, 1947, in Sidney to Harry and Martha (Braasch) Segelke. Richard was raised on the Segelke farm west of Peetz, CO, and attended Peetz High School until he graduated in 1965. On August 29, 1971, Richard married Sharon Hall and remained on the Segelke farm where they welcomed their sons Brad and Chad, before they later moved to town.
Dick was skilled in drywall and, together with his brothers, operated Segelke Drywall for several years while working the Segelke family farm. He was later employed with Frenchman Valley Co-op in Sidney until he retired. Retirement didn't seem to stick, and being the kind of guy that was always in need of a project, Richard took on a USPS rural mail route to occupy his time. Being a farmer at heart, this route allowed him to tour the countryside.
He appreciated a good collection; the hunt at an auction or sale was always time well spent. He enjoyed gardening, annually proving his "green thumb" with an abundance of fresh produce, of the weather held. Communal gardening with his sister, neighbor, and Elaine happened every year; they championed their own retirement community.
Watching high school sports became a dedicated cause, able to relive his own championship days through his grandsons as Peetz Bulldogs in their own right.
Dick valued his friends and family to the core. He held all of his nieces and nephews in high regard; he was affectionately, "Uncle Dick." A lifelong friend, neighbor, or member of the coffee shop crew, Richard always valued a good story and camaraderie for a good time. Stories of growing up with his sisters, Nancy and Sharon, on the farm were highlights at family gatherings.
Richard is survived by his sons, Brad Segelke and wife Melanie, and their children Chance and Colton of Peetz, CO, and Chad Segelke of Denver, CO; sister Nancy Hare of Canyon, TX; and companion Elaine Raffelson of Padroni, CO.
Richard is preceded in death by his wife Sharon; parents, Henry and Martha; siblings, Bill, Harold, Arlo, Larry, Dorothy, and Sharon.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Elaine Raffelson and Rick Calahan.
