Richard G. "Dick" Smith

Richard G. ""Dick"" Smith, 94, of Ingram, Texas passed away on January 8, 2026 at his home. He was born in Leominster, Massachusetts to Ernest C. and Mildred I. Smith on April 12, 1931. He met Hilda M. Wernli of Pawnee, Texas, while he was stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, and they married on January 27, 1956, in Leominster. They had two children, Rick and Sue.

He was a graduate of Leominster High School. He began working at the age of 14 for the J.C. DeLisle Co. of Leominster. He served in the U.S. Army for two years, especially enjoying his time in San Antonio. He returned to work for J.C. DeLisle, then later was store manager for Allen's Department Store in Leominster.

After moving his family to Harlingen, Texas in 1972, he worked for Watson & Watson, Certified Public Accountants. During his time there, he earned his CPA certificate and later became a partner in the firm.

Upon his retirement from the firm, he became interested in genealogy and devoted much of his time to researching his family tree. He was a lifetime member of Wilder Masonic Lodge in Leominster. He later became a member of the Burnet Genealogy Club, Burnet Computer Club, Mayflower Society, and Sons of the American Revolution.

Having moved from Harlingen to Burnet, Texas in 1994, he and Hilda joined Burnet Presbyterian Church, where they were active in church life. They made many friends there and missed them after a medical emergency led them to move to Ingram, where his children and grandchildren could assist with his care.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister, Mildred Adelia; brother Charles E. Smith; nephew Jeffrey C. Smith; and niece Joan Smith Nelson.

Survivors include his wife, Hilda; son Richard C. Smith and his wife, Joyce; daughter Susan I. Nidever; granddaughters Breanna Nidever, Meghan Nidever Neumann and her husband, David, and Kylie Nidever; great-granddaughter, Alexandra Neumann; and nephew Norman C. Smith.

Visitation will be held 5-7 PM Sunday, January 18, 2026 at Grimes Funeral Chapels, Kerrville, Texas.

Following a brief graveside service on January 28, 2026 at 1:30 PM, he will be laid to rest at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
