Richard Daniel "Dick" Smith, 83

Richard Daniel "Dick" Smith, of Wellsville, passed away Wednesday afternoon, March 4, 2026, while surrounded by his loving family at St. Elizabeth Hospital following a brief illness. He was 83 years old.

Born in Steubenville, November 26, 1942, he was a son of the late Andrew Zdinak and Anna Rock Smith. He was a member of the Toronto High School Class of 1960 and then served with the U.S. Navy where he served on the USS Taconic. He returned to the area and earned his bachelor's degree from Ohio University. He was a member of Holy Trinity Parish where he was a cantor for over 20 years. An active member on the board of St. Aloysius School for many years, he was also active in Christ Renews His Parish and the Parish Ministry Process. For 30 years, Dick worked as an environmental engineer at First Energy/Penn Power and following retirement he became a substitute teacher for Beaver Local and St. Aloysius School. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and, above all things in life, he loved his wife and his family.

Left to cherish his memory is his devoted wife of 57 years, Mary Ann Argentine Smith, at home. The couple married December 7, 1968. Together they raised a loving family of four children: three daughters, Kristin Smith, Donna Turner (John), and Jillian Longo (Ryan), and son, Steven Smith (Diamira). There are eight grandchildren: Cameron, Joseph, and Eddie McNicol, Elena and Rosanna Turner, and Vito, Contessa, and August Longo. He will also be sadly missed by his best friend, Max Ace. He also leaves behind a sister Paula Smith, a brother Robert (Jill) Smith, and a sister-in-law Donna Smith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, A. David Smith, and a son-in-law, Sean McNicol.

A funeral service will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Sunday at the Dawson Funeral Home where friends may visit three hours prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Following the service, friends and family will gather at the Dawson Family Center for fellowship.
