Richard Clayton Spicer Sr., a resident of Birmingham for almost 50 years, passed away unexpectedly on August 27, 2025, at the age of 76.

He was born on October 9, 1948, in Norwich, Connecticut, to William Bradford and Dorothy Donna (née Davenport) Spicer. With his father serving in the military, Richard spent his childhood moving often, though he held a special fondness for Cape Cod, where he lived with his family for a time. After graduating from high school in Massachusetts, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving bravely in Vietnam and later being stationed in Germany by 1970. He remained a very proud veteran throughout his life.

Richard's life changed on a New Year's Eve when family friends arranged a blind date with Vivian Frykman. Their connection was instant, and the two were married on May 25, 1974, in Colchester, Connecticut. Together, they built a loving family and shared over 50 years of marriage.

After settling in Michigan, Richard earned his associate's degree from Oakland Community College, reflecting his dedication to learning and perseverance. Professionally, he worked for many years as a computer programmer before beginning a second career in education. Richard served as a paraprofessional at Seaholm High School for 10 years, retiring from Birmingham Schools. He also poured his heart into coaching football and baseball, finding great joy in guiding and mentoring young athletes.

Beyond work, Richard had many passions. He loved tending his vegetable garden, listening to music, watching the History Channel, and spending time with his family.

Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Vivian Spicer; his children, Rick Spicer Jr., Sean (Wendy) Spicer, Tim Spicer, Kevin (fiancée Jennifer) Spicer, and Megan (Max) Schiebold; his cherished grandchildren, Noah, Quinton, Allison, and Charlotte; and his sister, Christine Einhellig. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Dorothy Spicer.

A memorial gathering will take place from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Tuesday, September 9, 2025 at Gramer Funeral Home, 705 North Main Street, Clawson, Michigan, 48017.
